Members of the Pledge community attended exclusive events demonstrating the power and opportunity of collective action in addressing environmental challenges.

The power of collaboration underpinned the first-ever Mexico City Climate Action Week in October as participants were invited to reconsider the climate crisis.

Alicia Bárcena, Mexico's environment and natural resources secretary, called the inaugural climate meeting a "moral call."

"Climate change is not only the greatest challenge of our time, but also the greatest opportunity to transform our societies towards justice, sustainability, and peace,” Bárcena said on the final day.

She also noted such a transformation requires multilateral work between governments, the private sector, and civil society—a sentiment that dovetails with The Climate Pledge, which was founded on the premise that the private sector can play a meaningful role in the global effort to reduce carbon emissions, and that the impact of a coalition is far greater than any one enterprise.

This spirit of cooperation and opportunity permeated the week’s activities, which included a Climate Pledge-led site visit to historic Xochimilco and an intimate dinner; panels featuring Pledge signatories; and a showcase hosted by C40 Cities, an integral partner behind the Laneshift initiative.

Learn more below about the programming attended by Amazon, Brambles, Daisytek, Heineken, Nespresso, NISA Energy, Noja Packaging, Prologis, SIR, Uber, and VEMO, among others.

The Climate Pledge Xochimilco site visit

The Pledge organized a trip to Xochimilco, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to a centuries-old farming practice called chinampa, in which human-made floating garden islands are used to grow crops in wetlands. This system is an important part of Mexico’s biodiversity and a water source for Mexico City, and is under threat from urban sprawl, groundwater depletion, and climate change. In 2024, Amazon announced an investment to support wetland restoration to help preserve and revitalize the chinampas.

Participants including Brambles, Heineken, Noja Packaging, SIR, Uber, and VEMO  learned about the restoration efforts. The site visit highlighted the impact partners can have working together on similar initiatives.

The Climate Pledge Mexico City dinner

Current and prospective Pledge signatories gathered at Baldío, a restaurant that sources its food from Mexican farmers. The evening began with remarks from Swetank Gupta, a sustainability leader at Amazon Mexico, and Jose Zazueta, director of retail operations at Amazon Mexico.

Prospective signatories heard from Pledge members like Heineken about the benefits of collaboration and access to a global network. Company representatives also expressed appreciation for The Climate Pledge’s presence in Mexico and emphasized the importance of greater visibility and support in the region.

Laneshift Mexico City showcase

The Climate Pledge, C40 Cities, the Amazon Operations team in Mexico, and the Secretariat of the Environment of Mexico City hosted “Advancing the Decarbonization of Freight Transport in Mexico City,” an event focused on the transition to lower-emissions urban freight.

In 2023, the Pledge and C40 launched Laneshift, an initiative that aims to accelerate the transition to cleaner tail-pipe emissions logistics vehicles. The Climate Pledge, signatory VEMO, and C40 Cities recently announced a strategic alliance to accelerate the adoption of electric freight transport in Mexico.

Amazon and AWS at Mexico City Climate Action Week

In addition to Climate Pledge events, Amazon representatives spoke on Mexico City Climate Action Week panels. Claire Parrod, senior program manager for sustainability with Amazon Operations in Mexico, shared Amazon’s journey deploying electric vehicles (EVs) across its middle- and last-mile logistics network during the “Connected to the Future: Electromobility in Mexico” panel.

AWS also announced a “Sustainability Ideathon” in collaboration with Tec de Monterrey University, which selected three innovative research projects addressing critical environmental challenges for funding.
