Amazon was a founding partner in the US Department of Energy Commercial Heat Pump Accelerator program, launched in 2024. Phase 2 of the RTU (Rooftop Unit) 2.0 project launched in November 2025 and includes development of a specification for next-generation RTU’s, an incubator for new technologies, and an X-prize competition. The goal is to shorten time-to-market for new heat pump solutions – including low-carbon source materials, complete EPD’s, ultra-low-GWP refrigerants or solid-state technology, and integrated controls. Amazon, Pledge signatories, and suppliers will collaborate to accelerate innovation, pilot new technologies, and support commercialization.
